Magnesium-Based Powder Materials for Additive Manufacturing

As industries such as aerospace, automotive, consumer electronics, and biomedical engineering continue to pursue lightweight and high-performance solutions, magnesium alloys—known as one of the lightest structural metallic materials—are attracting increasing attention in additive manufacturing (AM).

Metal additive manufacturing overcomes many limitations of conventional manufacturing processes, offering high design freedom, efficient material utilization, precise forming capability, and relatively controlled energy consumption. By optimizing process parameters, the microstructure and mechanical properties of magnesium alloys can be tailored, enabling integrated design of structure and performance and supporting the near-net-shape fabrication of complex lightweight components.

With a density of approximately 1.74 g/cm³, magnesium alloys also exhibit high specific strength and stiffness, excellent vibration damping, thermal stability, and electromagnetic shielding performance. These characteristics make magnesium-based powders increasingly relevant for metal additive manufacturing applications.

Common Magnesium Alloy Powder Systems for AM

AZ Series (AZ31, AZ61,AZ91)

The AZ (Mg–Al–Zn) series is derived from Mg–Al alloys, with zinc additions improving creep resistance and reducing the negative impact of impurity elements such as Fe and Ni on corrosion performance. These alloys offer balanced mechanical properties and reasonable corrosion resistance, making them among the most widely studied magnesium powders for additive manufacturing.

ZK Series (ZK60, ZK61)

The ZK (Mg–Zn–Zr) series incorporates zirconium to refine grain structure and enhance solid-solution strengthening, resulting in improved mechanical performance. This system shows promising potential, particularly for biomedical and biodegradable implant research in additive manufacturing.

WE Series (WE43)

WE (Mg–RE) alloys are rare-earth magnesium alloys known for their favorable mechanical and creep properties at room and elevated temperatures. Due to material cost and processing challenges, AM research has so far focused mainly on AZ alloys. Developing cost-effective, high-performance rare-earth magnesium powders remains an important research direction.
